This guide is designed to help you navigate a conversation with your child after watching the video together. The goal is to move from judgment to curiosity, using proven therapeutic techniques to keep the dialogue open and honest.
Before You Start
The Setting: Choose a neutral time (like a car ride or relaxing on the couch) where you aren’t staring each other down.
The Goal: You aren’t “interrogating”; you are “learning together” about how THC affects the body’s systems.
The 20/80 Rule: Aim to listen 80% of the time. If they share something honest, thank them for their trust rather than jumping into a lecture.
Please watch the video together with your children before starting the discussion.
Conversation Starters
To make these questions work, you should preface the talk with something like:
I just want to watch this with you so we both know the facts. I’m not looking to trap you or get you in trouble; I just think that ‘mind vs. body’ part was really intense and wanted to see what you thought.
After watching the video together, below are a few conversation starters that you can use:
- The Pressure: “I know a lot of kids feel like THC is ‘harmless’ or just part of hanging out. After seeing the section on the heart and lungs, do you think it’s hard for people your age to balance what they hear from friends vs. what the science says?”
- On Sleep: “A lot of people think THC helps them sleep because it makes them drowsy. But the video showed it actually blocks REM sleep, which is the part that makes you feel rested. Do you think kids your age would be surprised to learn that using THC to sleep actually makes them feel more tired and groggy the next day?”
- The “Friend” Proxy: “If one of your friends started having those stomach issues or school issues the video talked about, do you think they’d realize it was the THC, or would they just think they were sick?”
- The Value Alignment: “You’re working so hard on [Basketball/Art/Coding]. Does seeing how THC affects the brain’s focus make you think about how it might get in the way of your goals?”
- On the Brain: “It’s wild how the brain keeps developing until 25. Based on what the video showed, how do you think that might change how a person handles school or sports?”
- On General Impact: “Of all the organs they mentioned—heart, lungs, brain—which one surprised you the most and why?”
- On Greening Out: “The video mentioned ‘greening out’ and how scary that can be for the body. What have you heard people say about that, or is that something people even talk about at school?”
- The Stress Angle: “Sometimes people use things like THC because they’re stressed or can’t sleep. If you ever felt that kind of pressure, what do you think would be a better way for us to help you handle it than what we saw in the video?”
- The Performance Angle “The video talked about ‘brain fog’ affecting memory and focus in class. Do you think it’s easy for someone to realize how much it’s holding them back, or does it happen so slowly they don’t notice it?”
